It could all change of course. There's still nearly half an hour of play to go.
But: England beating Croatia by 3 goals so far, with the latter team rattled and in disarray?
Up to now, even under Capello (whom I'm prepared to give a lot of credit to), the changes in players, tactics and formation has seemed (despite glimmers and positive signs) still rather easy or safe to regard as a case of rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.
But this sounds (I'm listening on 5live) genuinely inspiring and exciting. Am I tempting fate?
Update: final score Croatia 1 England 4. Do we blame the atom smasher at Cern? Amazing stuff.

Hahah! and Switzerland 1, Luxembourg 2! Is the Cern accelerator causing black holes in football pitches?
It has changed - for the better!
4-1! Come onnnnnn!
I had honestly thought we would be lucky to come away with a draw. What the hell do I know about football eh?
What do any of us know? I had no expectations, except that we would be struggling. I almost didn't bother listening to it!
my first time here today after ending up here nearly every time yesterday.
dare I say that I had forgotten there was any football on tonight....far too busy playing with black boxes to worry about penalty boxes
Hi again lady, I was listening to 5 live on the pc so I could do both :)
ARGH I emerge from the magic black box into a sports post oh no...I'm still licking my wounds over Waterford's hurling loss on Sunday.
On the plus side, we haven't been blown to bits by the supercolliderthingy, so hurrah.
Enjoying your blog...
Hi susan, yes and possibly the first sports post I've written here! Thanks for dropping by and for the comment :)
Wow, I was wondering when I was going to land here from the black box. I almost cheated, and just came via a comment. but it was worth the wait!
Man I'm back again! well Hi
The widget brought me here twice...is it trying to tell me something?
Aaaargh! Just barely sat down to watch it now!
Watching it anyway, I just didn't think sitting next to a computer could, I dunno, inform me of the result!
Ah, yes, I do recall the good people on the Today programme making reference to a football match.
Do we all get a prize now? Or do we just get to wander around thinking we're not quite as rubbish at our national game as we thought we were?
Either way, I'll use it as a good excuse to continue being exceedingly jolly.
Love the cat. I'm not familiar with the subject of your blog today. I surfed in here on the black box game.
Here from the widget, but thanks for the score as I am a Brit' now living in Oklahoma. ENGERLAND!
I have absolutely no clue what you are talking about! I popped in here via the magical black box...
Hi ken, I think I've passed you by on my travels, don't think I've landed at yours yet though? I could be wrong, so bewildering is this getting :) Good to see you anyway.
Only twice, papercuts? Compared to what some people are having to suffer, I think you're getting off relatively unscathed :) Good to see you too.
mariarocia (great name, and hi!) - hope I didn't spoil the game for you if you were watching later? I just couldn't believe how well we were playing so I had to blog it.
Hi but why?, I think the prize is that lots of people will be much more cheerful now - the downside is that lots of people will now start saying we're going to be real contenders at the 2010 World Cup...
Hi ashleyladd and thanks. The post in question is football (ie soccer) - we've been very poor at our own national game in recent years, and last night was a huge exception! Same explanation goes to willow too - hi and welcome to you both!
britgalsarah - hi, welcome, and glad to be of service :)
I'll be back later with more drinks, snacks, first aid and news as it happens - after I've been to and got back from work...
Good to see Stray's widget is serving up to quality destinations!
Thanks for the photo, via NMJ, by the way. She's coming for dinner on Saturday to Hullabobo villas, our first dinner guest!
Good grief, trousers - ypur living room is positively heaving with people. Please don't blame Stray if anything gets spilled on the carpet.
Yes Trousers
You are, indeed, "tempting fate".
And this just as an England team tried to get away from fuzzy-wuzzy kinda-stuff.
A bit hectic isn't it, ms m!
Oh and good afternoon, friend from Finland!
Ooops missed you there mcbobo, thank you kindly, and nice to see you! I'm glad you like the photo, I never said anything but hoped/presumed it would find its way to you.
Hope dinner goes well, my best wishes to you all!
The black box over football any day!!
Hi casdok, I dream of a world in which, maybe one day, maybe even within our lifetime, the two could exist in peace and harmony (did I really just say that?)
'Update: final score Croatia 1 England 4. Do we blame the atom smasher at Cern? Amazing stuff.'
No, we blame the Croatians playing with 10 men after which England were able to score 3 goals.
This is my third time of experiencing the trouser!
^^^Someone up there said 'bollicks'. I'm reporting this blog to the...um...sweary council of Great Britain. You'll be banned, I tells ya. Banninated!
Don't follow footy but glad you are happy England won!
Oh, and I didn't come through black box this time, giving that addiction a break! lol
Black Box arrival :) I caught the last three goals last night on the highlights. But don't it just piss you off that we cannot watch our national team without without paying for it.
85,000 stranded football supporters are "at risk" and in dire need of therapy.
Another Black Box arrival. I was happily browsing through the blog and found the link for Requiem for Dying Mothers. Eight minutes or so later I'm completely blown away and have found a new act to explore. Has made my week.
Balck Box drop in here :-)
Back again.......slipping away guilty as I haven't stopped playing with the black box...
Hi luckyluke, in my book a Croatian side playing completely unbeaten at home and down to ten men is still a dangerous prospect - very much so for England anyway. And why were they down to 10 men? We had them rattled. We also played a good game, so I'm happy with that (and really shouldn't rise to the bait!).
Hi papercuts - well you swored as well, even if you were just quoting :)
Thanks trixie, and I'm pleased that you wandered over here of your own accord. I shall be exploring the wealth of blogs I now have links to (yours included) once this has all died down - right now I'm too busy still administering drinks, snacks, first aid and the like...
Hi dot, I recognise you from Caroline's site. Yes that does piss me off, but at least it's a pleasant change from paying for it in anxiety, tension, frustration and all-too-familiar disappointment...
But I'm not a therapist, lord seb!
bob, I'm really pleased about that, seriously. So glad to be of service. I do post about music on an occasional basis (you're lucky I haven't rambled on about The Fall yet!), and am very heartened that you've found something you like.
liz, nice to meet you too though I think I recognise your name via other blogs I visit. Am pleased you landed here anyway :)
I feel I need to go to black boxes anonoymous as I am back here again :-)
and yes i have definately seen you on other blogs!
I'll see you over at BB-Anon, liz :)
I'm back, but you must be black boxing, I don't see any body home.
Oh i took your news paper....well your not reading it?
Blackboxing? Me, ken? Surely not :)
